Espíritu Indómito Godello 2024

From vines grown at around 950 metres above sea level, this is an area that winemaker Mauricio Lorca feels particularly at home in. There is a big diurnal swing between day and night temperatures and an extenuated ripening period that helps to concentrate flavours in the berries.

 

Although this varietal is better known from Valdeorras and Bierzo in the northwest of Castilla y León, it is thriving and spreading in some of these higher altitude locations. And what a beautiful example this is. The nose offers a tantalising array of aromas from stony / mineral notes to subtle quince and citrus rind. This is a delicate Godello, a polar opposite to some of the big, waxy, oily, oaky, almost Viognier-like examples that one can find. The natural acidity sings alongside understated fruit elegance in this delightfully linear and lithe dry white.
