Camino Empedrado Amandi Tinto 2021

This voluptuous red wine from the sub-region of Amandi is a blend of 70% Mencia, 20% Garnacha and 10% Souson – aka Sousao / Souzão, a lesser-known grape native to Portugal.

 

Of all Mauricio’s Spanish reds this one probably has the strongest echoes of the New World, partly due to the partial use of new American oak barrels for 9 months. Still, the personality of native varietals leads the charge with wonderful crunchy red fruit character on both the nose and palate.

 

The wine is silky in texture with lovely licks of fresh vanilla pod and dark, luscious fruit flavours in the mouth. A big, gentle giant, somewhat akin to its maker.
